Fossil Hunting on the Isle of Wight. The Isle of Wight is world renowned for its Dinosaurs! It’s called the Dinosaur Island! Martin Simpson, known on the Isle of Wight as ‘the Fossil Man’, runs the fossil and gem shop at IOW Pearl. He is also an established expert on Cretaceous fossil crustaceans and has produced important papers on the Cretaceous Lower Greensand Group. He has produced a popular book on fossil hunting, titled Fossil Hunting on Dinosaur Island, and was heavily involved in the excavation of a significant specimen of the ankylosaur Polacanthus.
Martin runs guided fossil hunting trips for school groups, families and tourists throughout the year.
Details
Depending on the walk that you book you will meet the palaeontologist at the location of the fossil hunt.
You will be given expert advice and hear about the geological history of the Isle of Wight and the animals that once roamed here.
The trips will be informative no matter what your experience or level of knowledge of Geology or Palaeontology.
You will spend your time being given expert knowledge of the local area, its geological history and being shown all the best places to find fossils.
During your trip out, any fossils that you find will be identified along with explanations of their age.
Your expert guide will assist you in your discoveries by using there extensive local knowledge.
You will need to bring with you outdoor clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty and sturdy footwear that you don’t mind potentially getting wet – you will be on a beach.
Remember to bring a waterproof jacket or sun screen depending on the weather.
You should also bring some food to keep energy levels up as well as a drink to ensure you are well hydrated.
